Amelia Hernandez

Amelia S. Hernandez dedicated her life to helping children in her native Philippines. A high school teacher until her retirement in 1995, Amelia understood that education is the key to lifting children and their families out of poverty.

Tita Mely, as she was known to the children she helped, worked tirelessly to provide educational opportunities to the children of Payatas. She founded child development centers, established a library, recruited sponsors and personally sponsored more than 200 children to attend school.

She established Philippines Humanitarian in 2012, and in 2014 the organization was granted 501(c)3 status, fulfilling her dream of forming a nonprofit foundation to continue her work and help more families in the Philippines.

Amelia was also a renowned writer who won many awards and recognitions for her short stories, legends and poetry. She and her husband of nearly 60 years, Diosdado, raised 7 children, 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She passed away on November 24, 2014 at the age of 83.

We proudly continue the work she started to provide opportunities for these children to grow and thrive.
